New £2 drop passenger off / pick up fee introduced
26.05.11
Leeds Bradford Airport now charges motorists for dropping off or picking up passengers from the car park near the terminal. Any car driver wanting to to drop or collect passengers must pay a minimum £2 fee - no matter how briefly they stop. Previously drivers were allowed the first 10 minutes free in the drop off zone car park.
The so-called 'kiss and fly charge' has been introduced at a number of airports over the last year, including Luton, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Bristol and East Midlands. However at all of the other airports it is just £1, except Bournemouth, who charge £2.50.
Signs have been installed on the route to the airport warning drivers of the new charge. A ticket less system uses automatic number plate recognition to log cars entering the car park outside the terminal building. The fee is then calculated at the exit barrier with payment made with coins or cards, and increases to £5 for over 30 minutes and £10 for over an hour.
Drivers can still drop off and pick up passengers for free for up to an hour - but only by using the long stay car parks, which are around half a mile from the terminal. A shuttle bus will run on a continuous loop to take them to and from the terminal. Private hire car drivers can pay a £25 annual fee to use the short stay car park.
