Flights delayed after plane has tyre trouble
25.01.07
Flights were delayed for several hours at Leeds Bradford Airport yesterday afternoon after four of the six tyres on a passenger plane burst as it landed.
Sixty passengers were on board bmi flight BD412 from Heathrow when the incident happened at 12:08 yesterday afternoon. As it landed there were reports of smoke, and fire engines were called out to the runway. No-one was hurt in the incident.
Some arrivals were diverted or cancelled to give investigators time to inpect the plane. Other flights were delayed by up to four hours during the afternoon, with two-and-a-half hour delays on departures during the evening. bmi engineers are investigating and the incident has been reported to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
bmi spokesman Phil Shepherd said the incident would have been much worse had it not been for the skill of the pilot and his crew. One suggrested explanation for the problem is that the aircraft's anti-skid system failed to work.
