Stranded passenger buys a car to drive family home

A stranded passenger bought a car to make the 1300-mile journey home from Spain after his flight to Leeds Bradford Airport was cancelled because of the volcanic ash cloud, the Telegraph & Argus reports.
Craig Atkinson was on holiday in Benidorm with his wife and 3 year old son when the volcano began to erupt last week. The eruption had not worried him at first as they were due to fly back on Sunday. But when his flight was cancelled he realised he was stuck in Spain.
He told the newspaper: ‘At that point we looked at other options because if it was going to be only a couple of days we would have stayed, but there were horror stories.’ Mr Atkinson was told the earliest possible flight to Leeds Bradford Airport would be next Thursday, so he looked at hiring a car to leave in north France and was told it would cost more than €2000.
He said: ‘I bought an English language newspaper and rather than spending silly money to hire something I bought a car.’ He bought a 2001 British-registered Hyundai coupe for €1500 and set off on the journey to the French port of Caen on Tuesday afternoon, arriving at his home in Bingley on Wednesday evening. He said: ‘It was an interesting road trip.'
