A new airport parking row

Leeds Bradford Airport staff are working as wardens to stop motorists trying to avoid new drop-off charges, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. Leeds City Council trained employees at the airport to patrol Whitehouse Lane, the road leading to the airport, after the introduction of a minimum £2 fee for anyone wanting to drop off or collect passengers outside the terminal building saw drivers using the road in order to avoid the charge.
Whitehouse Lane has double yellow lines and anyone stopping on the road could get hit with a parking ticket - a minimum £50 fine. A council spokesman told the newspaper: ‘The lines have been in place for several years and the council has a legal duty to enforce them. Some airport staff have been trained by the council to carry out this role. They are clearly identified and enforce the double yellow lines in exactly the same way as our own officers.’
However, the move has been questioned by Otley and Yeadon councillors. Councillor Colin Campbell told the YEP: ‘It sends out the wrong message. It appears to say the council is prepared to use its powers to force people into the airport car park to get them charged.’
