More holiday sales boost Dart Group profits
18.11.11
Leeds Bradford Airport based Dart Group has announced pre-tax profits up 8% to £41.6 million in the 6 months to September 30. An improved performance at packaged holiday arm Jet2holidays, which sells flights from its budget airline Jet2 bundled with hotels and airport transfers, boosted profits, despite high jet fuel costs hitting its budget airline.
Jet2 grew significantly in the period, with capacity up by 29% compared to last year. The budget airline’s revenues were up by 27% to £316 million, as a result of a 32% increase in passenger numbers to 3.2 million scheduled passengers. The total number of routes served from all bases was up to 148.
The growth of Jet2holidays accounted for almost a quarter of the increase in Jet2 passengers. Load factors were up from 87.5% to 89.8%, however average fares decreased from £53.79 to £52.63 as a result of the 'challenging trading conditions'.
Retail revenue per passenger increased by 7% to £27.87 through a continued focus on pre-departure, in-flight and ancillary product sales. However, coupled with rising costs - with jet fuel prices rising by 24% per tonne - a weaker sterling exchange rate resulted in a reduction in Jet2's operating margins.
