Exhibition celebrates 80th anniversary
18.10.11
Leeds Bradford has opened a new photo exhibition to mark its 80th or ‘oak’ anniversary. The exhibition, which will run until the end of the year, chronicles the story of the airport, its aircraft and key moments through the decades.
As part of the exhibition, the airport is showcasing an historic mahogany and brass Rolls-Royce propeller from a Blackburn Kangaroo aircraft, which flew the first scheduled flight from Leeds to London in 1919. The propeller is thought to be the only surviving part of the aircraft type, a converted bomber.
The first flight was a result of a rail strike, when the government took over civil aircraft for mail flights. The passenger fare was £15 and 15 shillings one way or £30 return - which is equivalent to £1250 today - and there was space for just 7 passengers.
