Planning decision deferred over access concerns

A decision on Leeds Bradford Airport's expansion plans were deferred by Leeds councillors yesterday after councillors took on board local campaigners' arguments that increased passenger numbers would lead to more traffic, more noise, and more carbon emissions. They called for the plans to be rethought.
The airport’s £28m plan for the development of the passenger terminal was set to transform the site and help prepare it for the next decade of air travel. Part of a £70m package of improvements over the next 5 years, planners were asked to approve a two-storey extension to airport terminal to provide new entrance, improved internal facilities and associated landscaping works to the terminal building forecourt.
However, Councillors last night delayed a decision on the scheme amid concerns about the impact it could have on roads in the area, after receiving more than 900 letters of objection. Panel members said they could not give the scheme their backing at this stage. While supporting the improved airport facilities, they said much more work needed to be done on how people could get to the airport by public transport.
