Taxi drivers launch drop off charge petition
16.06.11
Taxi drivers are lobbying ‘greedy’ Leeds Bradford Airport bosses, calling for them to scrap their new drop-off charges, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. Drivers wanting to drop off or collect passengers outside the terminal now have to pay £2, no matter how brief their stop. Councillor Andrew Carter, leader of the Tory group on Leeds City Council, called the charge a ‘rip-off’.
The Professional Drivers’ Branch of the GMB union has launched a petition calling for the charges to be dropped. Yorkshire branch secretary Javaid Akhtar, a councillor and a taxi driver, said: ‘The airport management have become greedy. It is about time the people of this city and region stood up and said something.’
Naeem Azam, Yorkshire branch president for the GMB’s Professional Drivers’ Branch, added that cabbies have no choice but to add the cost of the new charge to fares, which means an extra £4 for a two-way trip. He said: ‘We want the airport to stop penalising passengers. Ultimately, they are being pushed elsewhere.’
The petition is in taxi offices and cabs for passengers to sign.Add to: del.icio.us | Digg it | Newsvine | NowPublic | Reddit
