Council to discuss night flight rule breaches
13.04.10
Councillors will discuss a report that reveals 32 breaches of planning guidelines over noisy night time-time flying at Leeds Bradford Airport this week, the Guardian reports. A late-running Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight to Islamabad is responsible for all of the breaches, disturbing residents in neighbouring Aireborough, Horsforth and beyond. The flight is scheduled to arrive at 19:25 and depart at 21:00, two hours earlier than the airport's 23:00 cut off time.
Councillors will discuss a report at the West Planning meeting on Thursday, which reveals that between November 2007 and October 2008, 15 flights breached planning consent; between November 2008 until October 2009 there were 10 flights; and from November 2009 until February 2010 there were seven.
The report states: ‘The airport has encountered a number of issues with the PIA flight that were beyond its control, such as the late arrival of the plane, technical problems and security incidents.’ Other problems, such as bad weather, had also led to late departures.
The airport says that it has plans in place to to resolve the problem. The airline is to bring the departure time of the service forward, there will be fewer flights and it will additionally use a quieter type of aircraft. Councillors are expected to request an update and firm timescale on the initiatives from the airport.
