Leeds Bradford generates as much CO2 as African country

Leeds Bradford Airport generates the same amount of CO2 each year as the entire African country of Gambia, an environmental body has claimed. The World Development Movement Group has produced rankings of all of the country's major airports in terms of the carbon emissions they emit in a year.
Although emissions at Leeds Bradford do not compare to the likes of Heathrow, the charity says it is shocked that the airport can impact the climate as much as an entire country. A spokesman said that the UK-wide growth in aviation is undermining efforts to control climate change.
However, a spokesman for the airport said aviation makes a big contribution to the developing economies of Africa and a relatively small impact on the environment compared to other sources and industries. Emissions from aviation make up just 6.3 percent of the UK's total, with energy generation, shipping and even agriculture generating more CO2.
