Jet2 announce New York flights

Jet2 has announced that it will operate flights between Leeds Bradford Airport and New York’s Newark Airport in the run-up to Christmas. The news comes the day after we reported comments from an airport executive that the hub was targeting New York flights, although we had understood from these comments that they were seeking a year round route, rather than a few pre-Christmas shopper trips.
The low-cost airline is trialling the route with a fortnightly service running in November and December - a total of four return flights - with the possibility of increasing its frequency if demand calls for it. The flights will leave on Thursday and return on Sunday and tie in with accommodation deals offered by sister company Jet2holidays.
The flights will be operated using a Boeing 757 carrying up to 220 passengers, split into two classes, with economy and an enhanced version of the Jet2Plus service offered on routes to Europe. Economy passengers will be given a free meal but will have to pay for drinks and snacks. A Jet2PlusUSA service will be available in 50 seats. It will cost £100 each way and offer champagne, two meals, drinks and an extra 3kg baggage allowance.
Shopping breaks start from £699, including 3 nights’ hotel accommodation, taxes and charges. Packages are available for three to five-star hotel options. Seat-only return flights start at £579.98.
Jet2holidays managing director Richard Bodin said: ‘We are launching Christmas shopping breaks as our research suggested this was the one thing most people tend to recommend to friends as a must-do first experience, and something they tend to repeat.’
Mr Bodin said that the Newark route was the first of a number of connections planned for its new winter schedule. He said: ‘We have a long list of potential destinations including sporting, religious and cultural events.' TTG reports that Lapland will be the next destination to be announced.
