Airport not ready for two bags change
04.01.08
Leeds Bradford Airport has not been given permission to relax the rule restricting passengers to one item of hand baggage. The airport will not be ready to implement the change on Monday (January 7), when it will be relaxed at 20 other UK airports.
Ruth Kelly, the Transport Minister, announced in November that UK airports would be allowed to relax the hand baggage restriction, if they could show they have sufficient screening capacity and were able to maintain security standards. The Yorkshire airport is one of several, including Gatwick, that have yet to prove to the Department for Transport (DfT) that they can cope with extra bags without compromising security.
A spokesman for the airport said: 'Our main concern is the safety and security of our passengers. The DfT has indicated that it intends to remove the restrictions for all UK airports from May, 2008. We are in the process of investigating how this can be accommodated without compromising our security responsibilities.'
